St.
Swithun's Gate (also know as Priory Gate) stands in "The
Close" in the shadow of the great Cathedral of Winchester.
The city of Winchester stands west of the River Itchen twelve
miles from the sea. The history of Winchester begins in
about 400 BC with an iron-age fortress built on a hill south
of town. Earthworks and relics testify to the existence
of Caer Gwent, the White City of the Celts. Around 150 BC,
the Belgae (a native tribe) arrived and settled in this
area. The Romans seem to have reached the Belgic town soon
after Emperor Claudius' invasion of Britain in 43 AD. King
Arthur and his knights are credited with restoring order
after RomeÕs departure in the 5th century...
